Problem Statement: Loneliness, often stemming from low self-esteem or personal circumstances, can lead to severe mental and physical consequences if unaddressed. More common among younger generations, it exacerbates existing health issues and increases the risk of cognitive decline. As loneliness continues to affect 8 million people worldwide and rises, effective solutions are essential to mitigate its impact.

Project Overview

Solution: A potential solution to combat loneliness is an app that connects individuals facing similar issues, providing a safe space for support and understanding. The "Friend Indeed" app features an explore function to help users find nearby hospitals, doctors, lawyers, rehabilitation centers, and other facilities. By consolidating resources in one platform, the app aims to improve users' self-esteem, address their internal and external conflicts, and facilitate socialization.

Significance: Loneliness affects single households, families, and diverse demographics. Around 50% of family members report loneliness, with women experiencing it more than men. Over 60% of the population faces loneliness, with higher rates in Gen Z and millennials at 80%. Diverse racial groups, like Hispanic, African American, and mixed-race individuals, generally feel lonelier.

Income status plays a role, with those earning under $25,000 per year being lonelier. City dwellers often feel lonelier than those in rural areas. Fostering healthy relationships is crucial in addressing loneliness, regardless of one's identity or living conditions.

Competitive Analysis

  • TalkLife: peer-to-peer mental health support network that allows users to share their experiences, connect with like-minded individuals, and offer support to each other. While it offers an anonymous space to share concerns, it lacks the feature of connecting users to professional help and resources.

  • BetterHelp: online therapy platform that connects users with licensed counselors and therapists. Although it provides professional mental health support, it doesn't focus on fostering connections between individuals experiencing similar issues or offering a peer support network.

  • Meetup: platform that enables users to find and join local groups based on their interests, facilitating in-person connections. While it helps people socialize and engage in activities, it does not specifically address loneliness or mental health.

  • 7 Cups: offers anonymous emotional support through trained listeners and access to licensed therapists. While it caters to users seeking emotional support, it doesn't facilitate long-term connections or friendships, which is essential to combatting loneliness.

"Friend Indeed" aims to address the gaps in existing solutions by creating a comprehensive platform that connects users with similar experiences for peer support and provides access to professional help and resources. This combination of features would set "Friend Indeed" apart from its competitors, offering a more holistic approach to tackling loneliness and improving mental health.

Research

Loneliness can envelop individuals, making them acutely aware of their isolation. While some people manage to cope with this feeling, others struggle or merely survive on hope. Younger individuals are particularly susceptible to loneliness as they have not yet developed effective coping strategies. Loneliness can be categorized into three types: situational, developmental, and internal loneliness (R. Mushtaq, Shoib, Shah & S. Mushtaq, 2014).

Situational loneliness arises from environmental instability, where external events create a sense of isolation. Examples include losing a job, relocating, or facing natural disasters. Such changes in one's surroundings have a direct relationship with situational loneliness.

Developmental loneliness occurs when a person consciously or unconsciously withdraws from elements that contribute to their growth and well-being. This type of loneliness highlights the importance of personal development in maintaining a healthy social life.

User Scenario

  1. Josh is struggling with addiction and desperately seeks help. He feels physically and psychologically drained and isolated due to his dependence on alcohol.

  2. Seeking support, Josh downloads the "Friend Indeed" app and identifies himself as someone grappling with alcohol addiction.

  3. The app connects Josh with other individuals facing similar challenges in his vicinity.

  4. Josh begins a conversation with Matthew, a fellow app user who shares his struggles and experiences.

  5. Matthew suggests a support group that has been helping him manage his addiction and even offers to drive Josh to a rehabilitation center.

  6. Six months later, Josh has adopted a healthier lifestyle and returned to work, no longer relying on alcohol to cope with loneliness.

  7. Josh and Matthew attend group sessions together, and Josh gradually starts to feel better and more connected.
